Gerald Jones MP recently visited Amey, a leading infrastructure provider of full life-cycle engineering, operations, and decarbonisation solutions. The visit was part of the Railway Industry Association’s (RIA) Rail Fellowship Programme, an initiative designed to give politicians deeper insights into the UK rail supply chain's vital role.
Amey is collaborating with Transport for Wales on a ground breaking project to upgrade the Core Valleys Lines, which serve Aberdare, Coryton, Merthyr Tydfil, Rhymney, and Treherbert. Far more than an infrastructure overhaul, this project is a catalyst for driving economic and social transformation in South Wales.
During the visit, the Merthyr Tydfil MP toured the facilities at Amey’s Taffs Well Depot, including the newly developed depot and control centre, gaining first-hand knowledge of the project’s progress and its long-term benefits to his constituency.
The visit also showcased the Rail Fellowship Programme’s goal of facilitating collaboration between industry and policymakers, ensuring the rail supply chain remains innovative, sustainable, and globally competitive.
Gerald Jones MP said: “The world’s first locomotive-hauled railway journey took place right here in Merthyr Tydfil in 1804, so it’s great to see the railway continuing to play a vital role in modern day Wales.
“With modern electric trains, greater capacity and more frequent services, the investment from the Welsh Government will hugely benefit local people.
“It was fantastic to take part in the Railway Industry Association’s Rail Fellowship Programme to see the hard work that makes all this possible.”
Wayne Brigden, Business Director at Amey, said: “The transformation of the Core Valley Lines is a game-changer for public transport in Wales, creating a modern, integrated network that strengthens connections between rural valley communities and Cardiff. The scope of this amazing transformational programme includes smart electrification, improved track layouts, new and upgraded stations, the installation of a state-of-the-art signalling system, and the introduction of new bi- and tri-mode trains, marking a significant step towards a more efficient and sustainable railway.
“It was a delight to welcome Gerald Jones MP to Taffs Well and showcase the investment that is making rail travel more accessible, frequent, and reliable. Beyond the infrastructure, we remain deeply committed to engaging with local communities, ensuring we’re not just improving transport but also being a responsible and supportive neighbour.”
Eli Rees-King Business Engagement Manager RIA Wales & Western RIA: “The Core Valley Lines upgrade is a great example of how private investment and expertise can support the public sector in delivering rail improvements. The project has been transformational for the economy of South East Wales and demonstrates how better connectivity can drive growth and create jobs.”
