Amey, in collaboration with the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA), has empowered more than 180 of its senior leaders across Rail and Highways to champion a sustainability-first mindset, in an accredited environment and sustainability leadership course.
Through the bespoke, Leading with Environmental Sustainability course, participants engaged with critical sustainability issues, focusing on knowledge, values, and green skills essential for sustainable transformation within the business.
The programme encouraged leaders to rethink preconceived ideas and embrace innovative approaches to sustainability, reflecting Amey’s commitment as a leading infrastructure provider to drive economic growth and community development while prioritising environmental stewardship and accelerating the change needed for a resilient and low carbon future.
Samantha Schofield, Head of Environment and Sustainability for Amey, said: “Working in collaboration with the IEMA has enabled us to deliver thought provoking content that challenges the thinking and behaviours of our leaders, supporting Amey’s commitment to achieving Net Zero by 2040 as part of our broader ESG goals.
“We’ve received positive feedback from attendees regarding the delivery of the sessions and hear increasing conversations taking place across teams regarding their environmental impacts. Our leaders commented on how the material changed their attitudes towards sustainability, empowered them to lead by example, and enabled reflection on what can be done differently on their contracts.”
IEMA Deputy CEO, Martin Baxter, said: “Green skills embedded all across the economy are key to driving corporate net zero transitions.
“Successful organisations are now weaving sustainability knowledge and skills throughout their workforce, from the boardroom to all operational areas of the business.
“While our ambition should be to make ‘all jobs greener’ – and over time provide every team member with some level of green skills – it is crucial that the leaders within businesses lead the way.
“Amey is showing real leadership in this area by working with IEMA to develop a bespoke course that supports the focus of their operations and takes consideration of the local environments that they work in every day.”
Amey’s ESG strategy outlines how the business will accelerate the change to a resilient and low carbon future, enhance the wellbeing of people and communities and achieve sustainable and responsible growth.
The launch of the ESG strategy was followed by a six-point framework for employees to help simplify and elevate great sustainability behaviours and practises, known as Planet+. These initiatives are helping Amey to deliver more sustainably and drive positive action within its business.
