In a partnership with Royal High School, Amey has installed vape detection alarms to put the health of students first.
Minister for Public Health and Prevention, Andrew Gwynne announced last year that a quarter of 11-15-year-olds used a vape. Witnessing this first hand and concerned for the health of their students, the team at Edinburgh’s Royal High School contacted Amey to see if there was a solution that could be put in place to prevent the students vaping in the toilets.
Located on the same corridor as the school’s senior management team offices, the toilets were a strategic place to install the alarms. Once vapour is detected, a loud alarm sounds which notifies the staff to act.
This project has successfully deterred students at Royal High School from vaping in the toilets and Amey is now taking steps to implement similar installations in Edinburgh, starting with Craigmount High School.
Nadeem Hamid, Facilities Manager for the Amey Edinburgh Schools Account, said: “Working with the Royal High School on this project was a no-brainer. Our impact on the community and young people is important to us. We are proud to be supporting the staff in creating a safe environment for the students to thrive and look forward to supporting other schools in tackling this issue.”
Kalina Haralampieva, Business Manager at Royal High School, said: “We were very happy with the installation service provided by Amey and subsequent maintenance of the vape alarms.”
