Overview
A new 1.4MW power plant containing 5,200 solar panels will supply enough power for around 350 homes at MOD South Cerney, home to 29 Regiment, Royal Logistic Corps.
This represents one-third of the annual consumption and will deliver significant savings.
Benefits
Projected carbon savings will reach 400 tonnes a year while costs are forecast to drop by an estimated £109,000 in the first year and more than £1 million after 10 years, rising to £2.7 million after 25 years.
Site-wide initiatives led to a 38.7% reduction in CO2 emissions from a 2009/10 baseline of 3,819 tonnes to 2,305 tonnes in 2019/20. To date the Defence Infrastructure Organisation team has collected eight awards recognising their environmental initiatives.
Future opportunities
A number of other measures aim to help create a sustainable future for the base. These include assigned building custodians to monitor energy use and annual climate change lectures along with environmental protection courses for logistics personnel
